北宋太宗太平兴国年间（公元976～984年）铸行，宋代第一种年号钱，隶书、篆书对钱形制。太平通宝方孔钱币，中国历代王朝多有铸造。以其用途，可以分为行用钱和厌胜钱（俗称花钱）两类。太平通宝为宋朝第一种对钱，南唐有篆书开元视为中国历史上第一种对钱。太平通宝篆书小平钱的发现和肯定，聊补宋代钱币史缺，与隶书太平通宝一同，可以确定为中国货币史重要时期的纲要钱。

开宋代以后中国铸币年号钱、对书钱和御书钱之先河，并形成传统、制度，绵延三百余年，是中国历史货币发展的重要阶段。此钱币为母钱，压铸痕迹深刻，历史年代感清晰，经过历史的沉淀和战争的洗礼，品相保存精美，而且此钱币正面和背面一致称呼为版别移位合背币，合背币存世量更为稀有，乃绝世珍品，一直以来都是受广大收藏家的喜爱和追捧。

During the Taiping Xingguo period of Taizong in the Northern Song Dynasty (A.D. 976-984), it was cast. It was the first kind of year number money in the Song Dynasty, and the official script and seal script were the form of money.
